The honest part

What Columbus does better

Buckeye football and college town culture. OSU game days are uniquely intense and Raleigh doesn't replicate that scale. Raleigh has ACC basketball (Cary, UNC Raleigh, Duke/UNC 2 hrs north) and Panthers/Hornets, but it's a different rhythm.

The food scene shifts. Columbus has a strong food scene (Service Bar, The Refectory, Lindey's) plus the Short North gallery hop. Raleigh's food scene is growing but tilts more Southern/coastal influence.

Real winter ends. Ohio winters are gray and cold; Lake Erie effect adds extra. Raleigh averages 42°F in winter with rare snow. Most Columbus families name this as the single biggest QoL flip.

Growth trajectory shifts. Columbus is growing (Intel fab, Honda EV plant) but Raleigh's banking-driven growth has been more sustained and is more directly tied to financial-services career paths.

"Columbus families are usually surprised by how much they save when they total up Ohio's state tax, city tax, and school district tax. Combined with the climate flip and similar college-town texture in Raleigh\'s growing arts districts (Mordecai, Oakwood), it's a smoother transition than people expect."

Schools

How Raleigh schools compare to Central Ohio

Columbus top public

Upper Arlington, Bexley, Olentangy Liberty, Dublin Coffman, and Westerville Central are among the strongest public school districts in Ohio, with excellent college placement. The trade-off is the home-price premium for access plus, in many of these districts, an additional school district income tax that stacks on top of state and city income tax.

Columbus City Schools context

Columbus City Schools as a whole has navigated significant operational and academic capacity issues. There are strong individual schools but outcomes are variable district-wide, and many families end up using open enrollment, charter schools, or relocating specifically to Upper Arlington, Bexley, or the surrounding suburban districts for school access.

Columbus private schools

Columbus Academy, Wellington School, St. Charles Preparatory, and Columbus School for Girls are the flagship Columbus-area privates at $25,000–$35,000/yr. Academically strong with solid college placement; admissions are competitive and waitlists run for top grades.

Raleigh WCPSS top tier

Green Hope High (9/10), Panther Creek High, Leesville Road High, and Apex High consistently rank in NC's top 10. Davis Drive Middle (9/10) and Weatherstone Elementary feed into them. Academic outcomes and college placement are competitive with Upper Arlington and Bexley, assignment is address-based with no transfer or charter-lottery uncertainty, and there's no school district income tax overlay.

Raleigh private schools

Ravenscroft, Durham Academy, and Cary Academy are the three flagship K-12 independents at $25,000–$35,000/yr — directly comparable to Columbus's flagship privates with similar academic profile. Raleigh Academy is excellent for younger grades. Waitlists for top grades can run 1–2 years; apply early.

Bottom line: Upper Arlington families relocating to a top Raleigh zone get equivalent academic outcomes at lower combined property + school district tax.

Questions Columbus buyers ask

Frequently asked

•How does Ohio's RITA + school district tax work, and what does the move actually save?

Ohio's tax stack is unusual and surprises most relocators. You have: (1) Ohio state income tax, which tops out around 3.5–4.0% at higher incomes; (2) Municipal income tax administered by RITA (Regional Income Tax Agency) for most Columbus-area cities — Columbus, Upper Arlington, Bexley, Worthington, and Dublin all charge ~2.5%; and (3) School district income tax in select districts (Bexley, New Albany-Plain Local, Olentangy, and others), which can add 0.75%–2.25% on top of everything else. A $300K-HHI Upper Arlington family pays Ohio state + UA city + RITA admin — and depending on school district, potentially school district income tax too. North Carolina charges a flat 4.5% with no municipal or school district income tax overlay. For most Columbus families above $200K HHI, the net annual savings is meaningful even after factoring in the higher NC base rate.
