What Raleigh gets right that Dallas doesn't
Property taxes that don't punish you.
Texas has no state income tax but levies effective property tax rates north of 2%. North Carolina charges 4.5% income tax but property taxes average 0.85% — less than half of Dallas. For a $750K home, that's roughly $16,500/yr in Dallas property tax vs $6,400/yr in Raleigh. Most Dallas → Raleigh movers come out ahead on net taxes; the math depends on income.
Mature trees, walkable streets, real seasons.
Raleigh is known as the "City of Oaks" for its dense urban tree canopy. Dallas is largely flat, hot, and concrete. If you've ever wished your morning walk had shade, Raleigh delivers. You'll also get genuine fall foliage, occasional snow, and springs that bloom hard — something you can't get in North Texas.
Mountains and beach within 3 hours.
Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway are 2.5 hours west. Atlantic beaches are 2.5 hours east. Dallas is a 5-hour drive from the nearest mountain or shoreline. For active families, this changes your entire calendar of long weekends.
A serious tech and research job market.
Research Triangle Park — Red Hat headquarters, Epic Games headquarters, Cisco, IBM, Google, Microsoft, and Apple's planned campus — all in the Raleigh area. If you're in tech, healthcare, or pharma, Raleigh recruits aggressively. The major tech companies have offices in both cities, which makes internal transfers a real option many Dallas professionals have already taken.
What Dallas does better
Tex-Mex you genuinely can't replicate. Raleigh has good Mexican food — Centro and Taqueria El Rodeo are both worth the drive — but it's not Tex-Mex. If queso and breakfast tacos are a religion in your house, you'll be making the occasional drive to Texas for a fix. Most Dallas transplants consider this their one real sacrifice.
DFW is a global airport hub. RDU (Raleigh-Durham International) has 40+ nonstop destinations and excellent domestic coverage. But DFW edges it significantly for nonstop international routes to Asia and South America. If you fly internationally several times a year for business, factor a connecting flight into your RDU calculus. For most travelers, it's a non-issue.
The math gets closer at high incomes. If your household income is $750K+, North Carolina's 4.5% flat state income tax can outweigh the Raleigh property-tax savings. We can run your specific numbers — the crossover point varies based on home price, mortgage deductions, and income composition. Book a call and we'll model it out.
"For most Dallas families in the $400K–$1.2M home range with combined income under $400K, Raleigh wins on net cost — plus the lifestyle gains. Above that, the math is close. I'll show you the actual numbers for your situation."

How Raleigh schools compare to Dallas ISD
How school assignment works in Raleigh
Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) assigns students to traditional public schools based on attendance zones tied to your home address — so where you buy directly determines your school. This differs from Dallas ISD's more flexible transfer system. WCPSS also operates magnet programs with STEM, arts, IB, and language immersion options; applications open each fall. Charter school options like Raleigh Charter High and Research Triangle Charter are also available. The key takeaway: do your school-zone research before you pick your neighborhood, because the same zip code can contain two very different attendance zones.
Top-rated Raleigh school zones for transplants
Cary consistently ranks among the highest in the state — Davis Drive Middle sits at 9/10 on GreatSchools and Green Hope High at 9/10. Apex (Wake County) and Panther Creek are also exceptional options, regularly placing in NC's top 10. Hayes Barton feeds to Broughton High School and Wiley Elementary (8/10). If top-tier public schools are your priority, Cary is the most direct equivalent to Frisco ISD or Carroll ISD in the Dallas area.
Private school landscape
Raleigh's private school ecosystem is strong. Ravenscroft School, St. David's School, and Cary Academy are the three flagship K-12 independents — comparable in academic profile to Dallas's Hockaday, ESD, and St. Mark's. All three consistently place graduates at top universities. Triangle Montessori Academy is an excellent option for younger grades. Tuition ranges from $18,000–$28,000/yr. Waitlists for top grades can be 1–2 years, so apply as early as possible.

Frequently asked
For most households, yes. Raleigh's cost of living index sits at 98 (national average = 100) vs Dallas at 102. The biggest driver is housing — Raleigh median home prices run about 4% above Dallas, but property taxes are dramatically lower.
