Moving from Houston to Raleigh? Here's what you actually need to know.
An honest guide to relocating from H-Town to the Carolinas — taxes, schools, hurricanes, traffic, and the trade-offs nobody talks about. Yes, you'll pay state income tax. Here's what you get back.
What Houston does better
Tex-Mex, BBQ, the Houston food scene. Raleigh BBQ (Sweet Lew's, Midwood) is solid but not Texas-style brisket. Tex-Mex doesn't really exist here — Raleigh's Mexican is more interior-style. Most Houston transplants make pilgrimages back for the food.
The energy industry tap. If your career is upstream/midstream oil and gas, Raleigh is mostly remote/hybrid territory. Raleigh is finance + healthcare + energy + tech (Duke Energy is here, but the upstream concentration is in Houston).
Hurricane season disappears. No more evacuation routes, plywood, generator runs, or Galveston flooding. Raleigh sits inland enough that hurricane impact is mostly rain remnants. This alone is worth the move for some families.
Less sprawl, less traffic. Houston is famously car-dependent and spread out. Raleigh is also car-dependent but tighter — most commutes are 20–30 min vs Houston's 45–90 min on I-10 / 610 / Beltway 8.
"Houston families almost always come for two reasons: schools and seasons. The Texas no-income-tax advantage is real, but Houston's property tax rate is among the highest in the country — Raleigh cuts that nearly in half. Add in mild winters and zero hurricane risk and most relocators are happy to pay NC's flat 4.5% income tax."

How Raleigh schools compare to Houston metro
Houston public top-tier
Memorial High, Bellaire High, Lamar High, and Carnegie Vanguard (HISD's flagship magnet) are nationally competitive. But access is tied either to specific (and expensive) attendance zones — Memorial, West U, Bellaire — or to a competitive HISD magnet/Vanguard application process. The premium for a Memorial or Bellaire address has climbed significantly over the last decade.
HISD overall
As a district, HISD ranks middle-of-the-pack nationally. Magnet and exam-school access is competitive and politically contested. Many families plan their middle-school years around Carnegie Vanguard or Lamar admissions, which adds uncertainty similar to what SF and Seattle families navigate.
Houston private schools
St. John's, Kinkaid, Episcopal High, St. Thomas' Episcopal, and Memorial Hall are the flagship Houston-area privates at $35,000–$45,000/yr. Academically excellent with strong college placement; admissions are competitive and waitlists run long.
Raleigh WCPSS top tier
Green Hope High (9/10), Panther Creek High, Leesville Road High, and Apex High consistently rank in NC's top 10. Davis Drive Middle (9/10) and Weatherstone Elementary feed into them. Crucially: there's no lottery — assignment is by home address, so where you buy directly determines your school. Most Houston families relocating to one of these zones don't need to pay for private at all.
Raleigh private schools
Ravenscroft, Durham Academy, and Cary Academy are the three flagship K-12 independents at $25,000–$35,000/yr — roughly $10K–$15K/yr less than comparable Houston privates with similar academic profile. Raleigh Academy is excellent for younger grades. Waitlists for top grades can run 1–2 years; apply early.
Bottom line: Houston families relocating to a top Raleigh zone often save $20K–$30K/yr on private school plus eliminate the West U / Bellaire home premium, while getting equivalent academic outcomes.

Frequently asked
Texas has no state income tax — that's real and it doesn't go away after a Raleigh move. North Carolina charges a flat 4.5% on all income. The offset: Harris County effective property tax averages ~2.20% (one of the highest in the country) vs Wake County at ~0.85%. On a $750K home, that's a ~$10,000/yr property tax swing in Raleigh's favor. Layer in dramatically lower hurricane-zone homeowners insurance ($4K–$10K/yr lower depending on home value) and the math frequently nets even or in Raleigh's favor for households under ~$500K HHI. Above that, Houston's zero income tax starts to dominate. Run your specific numbers — we'll model it for you.
