Moving from Seattle to Raleigh? Here's what you actually need to know.
An honest guide to relocating from the Pacific Northwest to the Carolinas — housing, sun, schools, and the trade-offs nobody talks about. Yes, you'll trade no income tax for some. Here's why families still do it.
What Seattle does better
The food + coffee culture you'll miss. Seattle has world-class coffee, Pacific seafood, and top-tier Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese. Raleigh has Common Market and a growing food scene but no equivalent depth in PNW-style cuisine. Most Seattle transplants make a return trip every 6 months for the food alone.
The mountains and the Sound. PNW outdoor access is uniquely epic — Cascades, Olympics, Puget Sound ferries. Raleigh has Falls Lake 25 min north, Crowders Mountain 35 min west, and Asheville/Blue Ridge 2 hours west. Solid but different scale.
226 sunny days vs 152. This is the single biggest QoL flip families report. Seattle's 9-month gray season is real. Raleigh gets actual fall, real spring, and 80°F summers with humidity — but you'll see the sun.
Less progressive monoculture. Seattle is a tech-driven, deeply progressive city. Raleigh is a banking-driven Southern city with growing tech presence (Lowe's, Bank of America tech orgs, Honeywell). The vibe is calmer and more centrist; the diversity story is real but different.
"Seattle's no-income-tax advantage is real and Raleigh can't match it on pure cost. But for most families, the relocation isn't about taxes — it's about sun, commute, and family time. I've worked with Seattle tech families who saved hundreds of hours per year just by trading the I-405 for a Raleigh commute. That's the unlock."

How Raleigh schools compare to Seattle / Eastside
Seattle public schools
Variable across the district. Roosevelt and Garfield (with its IB program) are well-regarded; Lakeside is a flagship private rather than public. Many Seattle families navigate the lottery and option-school process for top placements, which adds uncertainty similar to what SF families face. The unpredictability is a real factor in many Seattle → relocation decisions.
Eastside public elite
Bellevue, Mercer Island, Newport, and Issaquah school districts are nationally ranked, with elite college placement — but academic outcomes are tied to high property values. Entry to a top Bellevue or Mercer Island catchment now starts around $2M+ for a basic 4BR.
Seattle private schools
Lakeside School, The Bush School, University Prep, and Seattle Academy are the flagship Seattle-area privates at $40,000–$50,000/yr. Academically excellent with strong college placement; admissions are competitive and waitlists are long.
Raleigh WCPSS top tier
Green Hope High (9/10), Panther Creek High, Leesville Road High, and Apex High consistently rank in NC's top 10. Davis Drive Middle (9/10) and Weatherstone Elementary feed into them. Crucially: there's no lottery — assignment is by home address, so where you buy directly determines your school. Most Eastside families relocating to one of these zones don't need to pay for private at all.
Raleigh private schools
Ravenscroft, Durham Academy, and Cary Academy are the three flagship K-12 independents at $25,000–$35,000/yr — roughly half the cost of Seattle privates with comparable academic profile. Raleigh Academy is excellent for younger grades. But most Eastside relocating families end up not needing private at all because the top CMS zones deliver competitive outcomes for free.
Bottom line: Eastside families relocating to a top Raleigh zone get equivalent academic outcomes for less money — and Raleigh private is roughly half the cost of Seattle private.

Frequently asked
For pure-W2 households, Washington's zero state income tax is genuinely hard to beat on a spreadsheet. A $400K W2 household pays $0 in WA vs $18,000/yr in NC. Raleigh's housing is ~35% cheaper and property tax is similar (~0.85% vs Seattle's ~0.86–0.95%), but those savings don't fully close the gap on cost alone. Most Seattle → Raleigh moves are not driven by tax math — they're driven by sun, commute time, school predictability, family proximity, or escaping the WA capital gains tax for equity-heavy families. Run your specific numbers; the answer depends heavily on whether your income is W2, equity, or business.
